Reza Jafari & Associates
Reza Jafari & Associates is a studio of architecture and design based in Qom, Iran, founded in 2010 and led by Reza Jafari.
The office works across houses, cultural and commercial buildings, interiors and objects. Each commission begins with the conditions already on site: orientation, daylight, an existing wall, the line of a neighbouring roof. From there the work proceeds by reduction, keeping plans simple so that proportion, material and light are left to carry the building.
Few materials are used, used honestly, and details are drawn to quieten a junction rather than announce it. Drawing runs continuously from the first sketch to the last shop drawing; it is the instrument of the practice rather than a record of it.
The studio is kept deliberately small. The people who draw a project are the same people who detail it and follow it on site, so that what is designed is what is built.

Approach
We begin with the ground: orientation, light, the existing wall, the neighbouring roofline. What follows is a process of removal rather than addition.
Plans are kept simple so that materials, proportion and daylight can carry the building. We prefer few materials, used honestly, and details that quieten a junction rather than announce it.
Drawings are made continuously, from the first sketch to the last shop drawing. They are the instrument of the practice.

Work
The office works across houses, cultural buildings, interiors and objects, from small refurbishments to civic commissions. Scale is less important to us than the quality of a plan and the way a building meets its ground. We take on a limited number of projects each year so that drawing, detailing and site supervision remain in the same hands.

Materials
We prefer few materials, used honestly: plaster, concrete, brick, oiled timber, brass. Surfaces are left close to their natural state so that light, rather than finish, carries the room. Samples are made at full size and reviewed on site before anything is specified.
